Episode 005: The Truth is in Your Body

  • Hey there! It’s Adrienne here. Today, I want to dive into an often overlooked aspect of our being: our bodies and the instant sensations they experience. Let's start by considering this idea: "The body just feels. It doesn't have a filter of judgments or worry." Sounds simple, right?

But sit with that thought for a moment. Your body, this intricate system, experiences a stimulus and before you know it - bam! An immediate, visceral reaction. Your heart pounds, your cheeks warm, your palms might even get a little sweaty.

Now, imagine this: What if, instead of brushing off these sensations or immediately trying to rationalize them, you leaned into them? Listened to them? Trusted them? Because right there, in those raw, unfiltered, physical reactions, your truth is whispering to you. That, my friends, is what we're exploring today - the profound wisdom of our body and how it guides us to our most authentic selves.

Ever had that 'gut feeling' about something? That's your body communicating with you. There's no reasoning, no pondering – just a pure, instinctive response. In these moments, your body bypasses the brain's chatter and directly connects with your internal wisdom. But how often do we really listen to it?

Our gut feelings are there to guide us. They might not always align with our logical thinking, and that’s okay. Because they arise from a deeper, more intuitive part of us. When we start to really tune into these feelings, we start to trust our own internal guidance system.

Let's dive deeper into this idea. Our gut feelings, also known as our intuition, can often seem mysterious, elusive even. We've all experienced situations where something just didn't feel right, or we knew something intuitively before we had any evidence. These feelings, as woo woo as they might seem, originate from our body's wisdom.

Consider, for a moment, a time when your gut feelings guided you. Maybe you were considering a job offer that looked great on paper, but something about it just made you feel uneasy. Or perhaps you met someone who everyone else adored, but you couldn't shake off a feeling of unease around them. This, my friends, is your body speaking to you, guiding you, protecting you. It's your body's way of communicating a truth that your conscious mind may not yet have caught onto.

We've all heard the phrase "trust your gut," right? It's popular advice because it works! But how often do we really practice it? How often do we truly listen to our bodies when they're trying to communicate with us?

Intuition isn't just about these intangible feelings, though. It can also guide us in practical ways. Have you ever been stuck on a problem, only to have a sudden insight while you're out for a walk or in the shower? That's your body giving your mind space to let the intuitive solution bubble up.

In many ways, our gut feelings are our body's way of processing information at a faster, deeper level. Our conscious mind can only handle so much information at once, but our body and subconscious mind can process far more. They pick up on patterns, make connections, and deliver their conclusions to us in the form of intuitive feelings.

These gut feelings, this intuition, is a powerful tool. Our modern world values logic and rational thinking so much that we often discount these physical, visceral reactions. But what if we flipped the script? What if we started valuing these gut feelings as much as, if not more than, our conscious thoughts?

Trusting your gut doesn't mean disregarding logic or ignoring evidence. It means incorporating your body's wisdom into your decision-making process. It means recognizing that your body might pick up on things that your mind misses. It means honoring your intuition as a valuable source of information.

Trusting your gut is about tuning into your body's signals, respecting them, and giving them space to influence your decisions. It's about listening to that still, small voice within you that always knows what's best for you. It's about being true to your inner wisdom and allowing it to guide you. Because, my dear friends, your gut instincts, your intuition, your body's wisdom - they are all integral parts of your truth. And when you honor them, you honor yourself.

Our bodies have wisdom, an innate intelligence that goes beyond cognition. Think about it - our bodies can fight off diseases, heal wounds, and do incredible things without us consciously directing those actions. Our bodies know things that our conscious mind might not even be aware of. They can sense danger, feel love, and communicate truth without uttering a single word.

Let's consider the wisdom of the heart. Science has shown that the heart has its own 'little brain', a complex nervous system that communicates with the brain in our heads. When we feel strong emotions – love, fear, joy – we often feel it in our heart. It's no coincidence that we use phrases like 'heartache' or 'my heart is full'.

Embodied wisdom is this unique blend of intuition, physical sensation, and emotional intelligence. It’s the feeling in your gut when something is amiss. It’s the prickle on your skin when danger is near. It’s the heart that flutters when love or excitement is bubbling up within you.

Our bodies are finely tuned, intricate systems capable of picking up and responding to a myriad of stimuli in our environment. They react to everything from a sudden drop in temperature to the subtle micro-expressions of the people around us. This means, our bodies are constantly perceiving, interpreting, and responding to the world in real time, and there's a wealth of wisdom in that.

When you learn to listen to your body's cues, you access a stream of wisdom that's rooted in your unique biological makeup and lifetime of experiences. These intuitive, embodied messages can be especially useful when making decisions. For instance, imagine you're considering a job offer. On paper, everything looks great - the salary, the benefits, the company culture. But there's a tightness in your chest or a queasy feeling in your stomach every time you think about accepting the offer. That's embodied wisdom signaling that something isn't right for you.

What's fascinating is how the body holds onto emotions, memories, and experiences. The book, "The Body Keeps the Score," show us that our bodies 'remember' traumatic events, even if our minds have pushed them out of our conscious awareness. But it's not just traumas our bodies remember - they hold onto joy, love, excitement, success, and everything in between.

Think about your most cherished memories. Perhaps it's the warm, sun-drenched afternoons playing in the yard as a child, the ecstatic joy at a concert with friends, or the calm peace during a solitary walk in nature. As you recall these moments, your body re-experiences the sensations associated with those memories - the hot sun on your skin, the thrilling pulse of the music, the cool, refreshing breeze. You're not just remembering these moments; you're reliving them in your body.

These physical-emotional experiences, both positive and negative, shape us. They mold our behaviors, our preferences, our boundaries. They inform how we interact with the world and the people around us. They help us develop an understanding of what feels safe and what doesn't, what brings joy and what brings discomfort. By paying attention to these bodily cues, we can navigate our lives more effectively.

Moreover, when we begin to really listen, we may notice that our bodies communicate with us in unique ways. Maybe you feel stress as a knot in your stomach, or happiness makes your chest feel light. Everyone's body speaks their own language, and learning your body's language is a journey towards deeper self-understanding and acceptance. It’s a step towards living in peace with your authentic self.

Our bodies are beautiful instruments of perception, emotion, and experience. They're our allies in this journey of life, always ready to guide us towards our truth. The more we can tap into this embodied wisdom, the more aligned we will be with our authentic selves, and the more enriched and fulfilling our lives will become. It’s time to truly feel, listen and honor what our bodies are telling us, for they hold the keys to understanding our deepest truths and shaping our most authentic lives.

I know we've been delving pretty deep, so I want to give you a virtual high 5 for sticking with me through this. We've already explored the importance of acknowledging and trusting our gut reactions, our body's instinctual responses. But now, let's dig a little deeper and ask: How do we balance these gut feelings with our thoughts?

This isn't about choosing between feeling and thinking. It's about navigating the delicate dance between the two. And, my friends, this is where it gets interesting. See, our thoughts can often be clouded by doubts, fears, societal expectations, past experiences. Our feelings, our physical sensations, on the other hand, our body's immediate, unfiltered reactions, aren't influenced by these factors. They simply are.

But how often have we found ourselves questioning these immediate feelings? We feel something in our gut, but then our mind jumps in, and before we know it, we're second-guessing ourselves. We start to question: Was that feeling accurate? Should I really be trusting it? What if I'm wrong?  We oscillate between questioning and meaning making.

I want to pause here and say this: it's perfectly okay to have these doubts. It's natural. We're all human, and our minds are wired to analyze and question. But here's where we can make a conscious shift. Instead of letting these doubts consume us, we can acknowledge them and then gently set them aside.

In my own journey, I've found that when we really tune into our bodies, we start to recognize a sort of intuition, an inner knowing, that goes beyond conscious thought. This doesn't mean we disregard our thoughts entirely. No, it's about finding a balance, a dialogue between our thoughts and our feelings. We can use our thoughts to interpret and understand our physical sensations better, but we should avoid letting them overwrite what our body is telling us.

What I want to impart here is that what you feel is valid. The physical reactions are real. They are part of you. And, most importantly, they can serve as a powerful guide to your true self. So, the next time you experience that immediate, visceral reaction - the flushed face, the butterflies in your stomach, the tingling sensation running down your spine - take a moment. Take a deep breath. Feel it. Acknowledge it. And let it speak to you.

Now, I think this is important: Learning this dance, finding this balance, it's not a one-time thing. It's not something you learn and then you're done. It's an ongoing journey, a constant process of tuning in and adjusting, of learning and growing. And, my friends, that's the beauty of it.

This brings us back to our original point – what did you feel before you started to think about it? Because in that instinctive, unfiltered response, lies your truth.

Now we're getting to the heart of the matter, aren't we? We've established that our feelings and by feelings, again, I’m talking about physical sensations or reactions, often hold the key to our inner truth. But, how do we really listen to them? How do we discern the wisdom they're trying to convey?

Well, let's start by understanding that listening to our bodies is, fundamentally, about developing a deeper relationship with ourselves. It's about fostering a connection that's so profound, so intimate, that we're able to discern our bodies' subtlest whispers. It's about presence, about mindfulness, about honoring the incredible wisdom that resides within us.

When we learn to tune into our bodies and interpret our physical reactions without the bias of our minds, we find a different kind of truth – a truth that is unfiltered, raw, and deeply authentic. It's not always comfortable. It's not always what we want to hear. But it's always, without fail, aligned with our truest selves.

So how do we tune into this physical wisdom? By practicing mindfulness and body awareness. As you practice, you'll find that you become more in tune with your body's wisdom. You'll be able to sense your truth in the pit of your stomach, the tightening of your chest, or the calmness in your breath. You'll start to trust your body as a guide, leading you towards authenticity and away from pretense.

I want to give you 3 practices that I use to tune into my body.

    1. The body check-in: Start by observing your body throughout the day. Notice how it reacts to different situations, people, and environments. Pay attention to those gut feelings, the goosebumps, the heart flutters. For me, I have alarms set on my phone –5 of them actually, that remind me to do a body check-in.  How does my body feel? Where am I holding tension? I just notice what comes up.

    2. Meditation: To really learn to listen, we must create space for silence. Our lives are filled with noise, with distractions, that often drown out our bodies' messages. Set aside some time each day, just for yourself. It doesn't have to be long. Even a few moments of silence can make a world of difference. Sit with yourself, in stillness. Let your body speak.

    3. Body scanning: Another technique I find really helpful is body scanning. It's a type of mindfulness exercise or meditation where you focus your attention on different parts of your body, starting from the toes and working your way up to the head. As you scan each part, notice the sensations there. Are you holding tension? Do you feel lightness or heaviness? Hot or cold? It's a beautiful way to connect with your body, to feel grounded and centered.

As you practice these techniques, remember, this isn't a space for judgment. It's a space for curiosity. As you sit in silence, as you scan your body, don't analyze what you feel. Don't label it as 'good' or 'bad'. Simply observe. Be present with whatever comes up.

This is your journey. You get to decide what works best for you. Maybe you find that journaling helps you tap into your bodily sensations more. Or perhaps it's meditation or mindful walks outside. What works for me may not work for you.  The key here is to experiment, to try different approaches, and find what resonates with you.

Now, you might wonder, 'What if I don't feel anything?' That's okay too. It's about gradually cultivating a deeper connection with yourself. Some days, you might feel a lot. Other days, not so much. That's perfectly okay. What matters is that you're showing up, that you're creating space to listen.

Another thing I want you to understand is that this isn't about achieving a certain outcome. This isn't a test you need to ace. It's an invitation to explore, to discover, to connect. When you approach it with this mindset, you'll find that listening to your body becomes a liberating experience. You'll find that you're developing a sense of trust, a sense of unity with your body.

And here's the beautiful part. As you learn to listen to your body, as you honor your feelings, you start aligning with your truth. You start living a life that's in tune with your deepest self. You start transforming not just your relationship with yourself, but your relationship with life itself.

Learning to listen to your body, my friends, is an adventure of discovery, of connection, of authenticity. It's a pathway to living your truth, to loving your life. And remember, your body simply feels. It's instantaneous, raw, unfiltered. So, the next time you experience a feeling, pause. Listen. Trust the process, trust your body, and, above all, trust yourself.

  • Our bodies are such incredible vessels, holding onto so much more than we realize. Every emotion, every feeling, every pivotal moment – it leaves an imprint. The beauty is, we can learn to listen to these signals and decode what our body wants to tell us.

This exercise is crafted to help you tap into that inner wisdom, allowing you to connect with yourself on a whole new level.

    • Close your eyes and take three deep breaths. As you settle, ask yourself: 'What truths is my body trying to share with me right now?' Listen intently. It might be an emotion, a memory, or even just a sensation.

    • Now, write it all down. Don’t hold back and don't judge what comes up. This is your moment of truth, a sacred space between you and your body.

    • After pouring it all out, how do you feel? You can choose to release any heavy emotions, and honor the revelations that serve your growth.

Remember, there are no limits to this exercise - let your mind roam free, and be as detailed as you can. This is your time, your moment, your opportunity to make magic. Believe in your own potential, and let's see where this journey can take us together. Happy journaling!
