Episode 013: Embrace Renewal

  • Hey friends! Adrienne here.  Today, we’re going to get into the idea of embracing renewal. The world we live in is constantly changing, evolving, and transforming. However, are we giving ourselves the same privilege of renewal? If you've ever found yourself stuck in a rut or feeling like you're moving in circles, it may be time for a new beginning—a time for renewal.

September is a month that signifies a fresh start. Though it might have been a while since you started school, September, at least during our school aged years, was a time of new beginnings brimming with endless possibilities. I think it’s important to still tap into this feeling. Maybe you had a relaxing summer, and you’re eager to get into the fall and back to routines. Maybe you had a crazy busy summer, and September is a return to normalcy. For all of us, it’s a prelude to the holiday season, to the last few months of the year. For me, it’s a time of reflection –looking at what’s working and what’s not and making changes accordingly.

Before we fully get into the idea of renewal and reflecting on what’s working in our lives and what’s not, I want to encourage you to take the perspective of renewal, of growth, of self-development as an opportunity for expansion. So many of us are looking to fix what’s wrong with us, but the truth is, nothing is wrong with youThere’s nothing to fix. You are you, and that’s enough.

Maybe you’ve outgrown some of your behaviors, habits, and ways of being in the world. That’s something to be proud of, but yet, so many want to beat themselves up for all the times they weren’t perfect. Perfect is a lie, so let that go. Approach this again as an opportunity for expansion, for exploring the limitless potential that you have.

    What is Renewal?

Renewal is more than just a term we associate with library books or magazine subscriptions. In the context of personal development, renewal means a conscious and purposeful reset of mind, body, and spirit. It signifies a break from the old routines, a fresh perspective on familiar challenges, and the infusion of a new energy in everything we do.

    Why is Renewal Important?

In the fast-paced world we live in, it's easy to get caught in the cycle of repetitive actions, thoughts, and feelings. This cycle often leads to mental fatigue, emotional exhaustion, and a general feeling of being "stuck."

A renewal process helps us step back, evaluate our life choices, and make a conscious decision to change things for the better. It rejuvenates our soul, revitalizes our energy, and most importantly, gives us a sense of purpose and direction.

    The Psychology of Renewal

Our brains are wired to seek comfort and familiarity. As a result, stepping out of our comfort zones to experience something new often feels intimidating. However, research shows that our brains benefit from novelty and challenges.

New experiences stimulate the brain and can actually lead to the production of dopamine, the feel-good neurotransmitter. So, the nervousness you feel when trying something new is balanced by the pleasure that the brain experiences once it adapts to the situation.

    The Four Pillars of Renewal

    Mental Renewal

A mental renewal focuses on your mindset and thought patterns. Are you a perpetual pessimist? Do you struggle with self-doubt or worry excessively about things out of your control? Then a mental renewal could involve cultivating a positive mindset, maybe through techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or mindfulness meditation.

    Emotional Renewal

If you're emotionally drained, it can impact every area of your life. Emotional renewal might involve setting healthier boundaries, fostering deeper relationships, or working through past traumas that are hindering your present life.

    Physical Renewal

A physical renewal could involve anything from adopting a new exercise routine to improving your diet or getting enough sleep. The goal here is to bring about a healthier, more active you.

    Spiritual Renewal

Spirituality doesn't necessarily have to involve religion. It could be as simple as understanding your place in the universe or developing a deeper connection with your inner self. Spiritual renewal can provide a sense of peace and wholeness that's often missing in our busy lives.

    How to Embrace Renewal

    Take a Break

Sometimes all we need is a break from our regular environment to gain a fresh perspective. This could mean a weekend getaway, a vacation, or even just a day spent away from your usual surroundings.

    Reflect

Self-reflection is an integral part of any renewal process. Take some time to think about your life, your choices, and where you see yourself going. This could be as formal as journaling your thoughts or as informal as a meditative walk in the park.

    Plan and Act

After you've had time to reflect, it's essential to put those revelations into action. This could mean setting new goals, picking up new hobbies, or even making significant life changes like switching careers or moving to a new city.

    Seek Support

A journey of renewal is deeply personal, but that doesn't mean you have to go it alone. The support of friends, family, or even professionals like coaches or therapists can provide invaluable external perspectives and keep you accountable to your renewal goals.

    To Wrap Things Up…

Renewal is not just a buzzword; it's a necessary step for personal growth and emotional well-being. As you reflect on this concept, remember, the best time for renewal is now. It doesn't have to coincide with a new year, a new month, or any other milestone. Each day presents an opportunity to begin again, to renew and rejuvenate our lives in meaningful ways. Are you ready to embrace renewal?

The process of renewal gives you the tools to navigate life's ups and downs with grace, understanding, and resilience. In renewing ourselves, we aren't just finding a way to escape the monotony of life; we're rediscovering our own potential and capacity for joy, growth, and enduring happiness.

We’re going to get into the nitty gritty of renewal over the next 4 weeks.  I don’t want to start off with too much and overload you so it feels like another impossible thing to do on the endless list of things that must be done.  Rather, I’d like to start by just asking you to reflect.

As you go about your daily routines, ask yourself this: What part of you needs renewal today? Think: new energy, new perspective. See if a simple perspective shift will help.  Don’t worry if it doesn’t.  We’re going to get into different ways to embrace renewal in all the different areas of your life throughout the month.

I hope this episode has given you some things to think about. Until next time, live your truth, love your life.

  • As you go about your daily routines, ask yourself this: What part of you needs renewal today? Think: new energy, new perspective.

This is your time, your moment, your opportunity to make magic. Believe in your own potential, and let's see where this journey can take us. Happy journaling!
